Alex MaerbachYes we existBunny head / Orcutt fan reporting in to say they don’t get the Steely Dan hype either

sapphires1234There is Echo in here!I was a huge fan back in the 80s and all of a sudden remember them again early this year. It is wonderful to find this podcast wherein Courtney and Shane share their love and knowledge of the band’s music and history. Now I know what a sea shanty is and how important it is to Bunnymen’s music. By the way, I think “Read it Books” was probably an actual conversation between Ian and Julian Cope. (All those “you said” and “I said”).

niceguyjackFollow Down the Rabbit HoleEschewing the standard bio treatment in favor of a more appropriately winding and esoteric approach, this show packs in loads of fearlessly entertaining journeys down side roads, each adding critical context and layers to this already fascinating story. Like all good seekers, they’re not afraid to go where the story takes them, and lucky you...you get to go along. One of the most informative AND entertaining band histories I’ve ever encountered.

ursa777So glad this exists! This kind of niche podcasting is exactly what my brain needs right now. Courtney and Shane have a genuine love and respect for their subject, and it shows in the way they leave no stone unturned as they traverse the post-punk new wave music scene.

aTomTenHuhBased on this most current episode - admittedly the only one I have listened to (so far) - neither of you seem to know much about the context of the times of your subject, nor do you seem prepared. Clearly you are just looking things up online as you think of them. Seriously, since you don’t know anything about the Buzzcocks (Pete Shelley), the Durutti Column (Vini Reilly), OMD, and their contemporaries, what insights do you have about Echo and the Bunnymen. Knowledge is about context.

cjchctIn real timeOkay, I’m old enough to have been a Bunnymen fan since 1980 or thereabouts. I bought the first 4 or 5 albums upon release and then my tastes drifted, or theirs did, or something. I dunno. So, this podcast was a curiosity for a number of reasons. I’m joining it a little late: they just posted episode 22 ‘Birth of the Bunnymen’, where the band play their first show. And that kind of tells you what my point was going to be. The minutia can be both at times fascinating, and at others just tedious. The great details and insights will be appreciated by fans but there are also long wanders off the beaten path that struggle to find their way back home on the credibility stretched point they’re trying to make. But this is a fan’s odyssey, and you’re just tagging along for fun. This is well worth your time (if you have a lot of it) and you really like the Bunnymen. It could do with some editing, but I’ve listened to the first 7 episodes in the last couple of days so, the enthusiasm for the subject has me hooked, for now. Realistically, hard to dig it all too happily.

half nelsonGood stuffA Russian doll of esoteric bunnymen information. Highlights include; reenactments of band practice and bathroom encounters, deconstruction of song structure and the psychoanalysis of band members. Inferences, hear say and primary sources considered. + Feels.
