Grayhawk55Incredibly Informative… Powerfully WrittenPaul Reed is a master storyteller. He draws the listener in by solidly researching each topic… and then delivering a highly informative, comprehensive and well-paced summary of the topic at hand. But it is Paul’s deep respect and honor for the participants of The Great War… demonstrated through anecdotes or correspondence of the individuals involved … that makes this podcast so much more than just ‘facts and figures’ history. These podcasts highlight the very personal nature of WWI by including the soldiers’ stories… and that is what I find most engaging about The Old Front Line. Well done, Paul!

Niall42Outstanding podcastI cannot say how much I like this podcast. I listened to one episode after hearing Paul Reed with Dan Snow and was hooked. I have been mostly a WWII history person since my Dad and uncles all fought on the US side. But Paul has me really drawn me on WWI. This podcast has been so educational, with the recommended books and the episode websites are fantastic. Some episodes I have listened to two or three times. I went back and have started from the beginning, and cannot get enough. Thank you!

just. say yesBrilliantOne of the absolute best podcasts regardless of subject. Incredibly well researched, expertly told, with enormous compassion and integrity. Every episode is a real treat and an opportunity to dive deeper into an almost-forgotten conflict that still defines our world. Should be required listening for world leaders and high-schoolers alike.

Charles (Colorado)Great contentThis podcast is well produced and professionally scripted. Very interesting content with not just strategy and operations as the main theme. For example, Birds on the Western front is absolutely marvelous in how it incorporates soldiers’ civilian lives connecting with their war time surroundings.

PDXRedcoatSpecialist, yet AccessibleIf you have any interest in the First World War, then The Old Front Line Podcast is essential listening! The host is able to take in depth, specialist knowledge and present it in a way that is accessible to anyone, even those just starting to take an interest. After listening to this podcast, I have taken a greater interest in researching my own family history of the Great War. Thank you!
-
KodexxEloquentTale after tale about the people whose lives the Great War forever touched. Less about the bullets and battle plans and mind-numbing statistics.

Colonel RangerExcellent ResourceThis is an excellent resource for amateur (and even professional) historians and battlefield visitors. Well done!

ToothchiefAmazing Historical PodcastI just found this podcast this week and very glad I did. I can’t stop listening. The way he describes the scenery of the walks he takes us on is artistic and informative. He also brings the people back alive which is a tribute to their sacrifices. I plan on plugging into my virtual headset and visit the area he is describing to see if I am able to follow along.

tundraknobHumanityMr Reed really takes the time to address the humans who fought and died in the Great War. He details their service and their lives— really makes it so much more relatable then just a discussion of battle tactics and weaponry
-
Bruce H H S FSuperb, respectful, meaningfulHe sees the shadows which, Through him, speak. The blooded earth, brave voices bleak. The grief stays personal, Echoes through time. Thanks to Paul Reed And his Old Front Line.

TragicFigThe Best WW1 PodcastAn incredibly rich and informative podcast. Combines peerless knowledge of the battles and battlefields with detailed biographies—many from personal experience—of the men and women involved in the war. Terrific production values and a soothing, erudite, and compassionate delivery of the material. Quite simply the best WW1 podcast out there.

Nicole from the War ProjectGreat War MasterpieceDo you have a passion for the Great War? Do you want to learn more about it? Or are you simply curious about the Western Front and what it was like to be there more than a century ago? If any of these scenarios apply to you, I cannot say this earnestly enough: you NEED to listen to Paul Reed's show. He used to be a tour guide for the battlefields in France and in the Old Front Line Podcast, he brings that superb expertise directly to you, wherever you are. This is a totally unique listening experience — you're guided through Western Front battlefields as they appear today, in the modern era. Yet with each bend in the road and each slope of a hill, Paul tells you exactly what you'd see and describes the events which unfolded on that spot during the tumultuous years of the Great War. But don't get me wrong... this isn't merely an auditory explanation of maps or the French countryside. No. Each episode's elaborations are accompanied by rich historical summary, analysis, and contextual background of the First World War. And then in an instant, the dialogue zooms in on a granular, intimate story of a person who stood there, right where us listeners are 'standing.' In this way, you learn about the war not only from a macrocosmic perspective but also from the standpoint of a soldier, an officer, or a family member. Stories like the ones you'll hear in this show don't just teach you about a cemetery, farmhouse, or trench line, they make sure you never forget it as well. This cliche is used time and time again but here it rings truer than ever: you really feel like you're 'there' when you listen to this podcast. There's a lot out there on World War One but Paul Reed's work is an exception to the norm. It isn't a recitation of a wikipedia article or a watered-down version of a widely-known book we've all read a thousand times. You're not going to find something else like this. So if you listen to anything about the years between 1914 and 1918, make absolute certain you don't miss the Old Front Line. (Can you tell I'm a fan yet?) Keep up the stellar work, Paul! You've earned another listener for life!

schlageter23OutstandingJust started listening in preparation for a solo tour. Paul makes geography come alive through remembrances of the men who fought and died along “the old front line.” Hoping he covers Meuse-Argonne soon.

Anita FarrellVery absorbingPaul’s podcast is more than just battle dates and troop movements. He takes you for a walk to these places and gives visions of how they appeared in The Great War and now. He also has personal insights from decades of research. This is an excellent way to learn about WW1.
