Plug It Up: A Horror Movie Podcast About the Monstrous Feminine

42

Plug it Up is a horror movie podcast about the monstrous feminine. Host Caitlin Grant and her funny guests look at the monstrous feminine in all its forms, including: monstrous menstruation (like Carrie and Ginger Snaps), monstrous motherhood (like Rosemary’s Baby and The Omen), femmes fatales (like Jennifer’s Body and The Love Witch), black widows (like Dolores Claibore), body horror in women (like Teeth and Raw), treacherous friendships between women (like The Craft), women battling horrors (like You’re Next), and women who are themselves horrific (like Gone Girl). Although this show focuses on the experiences and portrayals of women in horror, it’s a gender inclusive space, and the discussion is open to people of all gender identities and presentations. It’s an explicitly intersectional feminist, trans-inclusive podcast for horror fans.

    Delightful and insightful
Caitlin and friends always entertain, whether it’s a critical analysis, a giggle fit with friends, or drowning a deserving film in haterade. Give this show a shot.

    Not impressed
I just started this podcast from the beginning and I have to say I’m extremely disappointed. A few minutes into the first episode (Carrie) both host and guest get crucial elements of the plot completely wrong. They frame (spoilers for a 40+ year old movie) Sue and Tommy’s involvement is the “prank” as up for interpretation or debate. This is blatantly not the case. Sue and Tommy have nothing to do with the “prank”, and in fact Sue’s trying to prevent it is what brings her to the prom. It could not be more explicit. Their innocence and Sue’s guilt over the “plug it up” scene are essential to not only both their character arcs but the film itself. How can someone count themselves as a fan, say they’ve seen it numerous times, and not know this?

Interesting and Enthusiastic Approach to Horror
I recently started listening to this podcast and I’m glad I did it! The host, Caitlin, is thoughtful and well-researched. She and her guests have an obvious love for the genre. She has also easy chemistry with everyone. I’m knocking off a star because one of the guests, Elizabeth, constantly interrupts. I can barely listen to any episode she’s on because she’s always talking over Caitlin and the other guests. It’s so aggressive and rude I’m surprised nobody has called her out on her. Other than that, keep up the good work! I look forward to more!

    House of Wax
Love the show!! Very thought provoking, honest takes on a traditionally male run genre…but I don’t know if I can live with the fact that you liked the remake of House of Wax more than the original…5 stars

    Excellent show - highly recommended
Big fan of the show. Caitlin does a great job summarizing the movies and guiding the guests. I am not a big horror fan so it’s great to get these breakdowns and discussions. I almost gave it 4 stars but in many of the episodes, the guests say “like” a lot and I’m actually a really big fan of that. So it’s 5 in my book. Also the episodes with Michael and Matt are especially great.

    Bingeing, but..
I love the concept of this podcast! It’s all I’ve been listening to lately and I’m getting through the first season. Caitlin’s synopsis of the movie at the beginning of each podcast before diving in is very helpful for me as I haven’t seen most of these movies, and I appreciate all the open discussions of topics rarely discussed as natural occurrences. The host and guests are usually highly entertaining and smart. My only hesitation to give 5 stars is that during the “Excision” and “The Babadook” episodes, I was so distracted by the extremely frequent usage of “like” in the midst of informed and insightful discussion that I couldn’t finish either episode. This review isn’t written with any intention to belittle or shame, only to encourage, and I will continue to listen.

One of the Best Horror Podcasts!
Caitlin and her podcast Plug It Up! is perhaps one of the best horror podcasts I've listened to. She was so generous to allow me to be a guest on a special episode where I was able to talk about a very unpopular/controversial backstory for Micheal Myers that I consider to be canon. I truly appreciated having hers as my first ever podcast I was on to espouse the Druid Curse of Thorn origin story from the Producer's Cut of Halloween 6 for Michael, which explains his motives and everything from the original film by John Carpenter. Her analysis and in-depth look to each film she talks about are very well organized and her guests are oftentimes very funny and offer more insight into these lesser known horror movie gems. Please consider giving her a listen; you won't regret it!

    Love This Podcast!
I love this podcast for talking about periods, coming of age, etc! It is not talked about enough! It is sad how taboo these things are and I’m super thankful you are going to be diving into this and bringing different guests on to have a variety of perspectives. I will be here for it!

    More like this please!
Horror genre content is something I have always loved, but up until fairly recent years, most of the surrounding culture & media like podcasts and blogs could be pretty alienating to women fans. This podcast is a welcome addition to a growing wave of horror fan media that includes unique and more diverse voices digging into under-explored aspects of the films I love. Keep ‘em coming!

Finally!!! A horror podcast for women *all women* and any trope lover!
  • MattchuC
A unique take amongst unique takes
The horror podcast world is beginning to produce an ever-widening gamut of perspectives on the genre and Plug It Up is totally unique addition to this growing wave with it’s focus on body horror through the lens of the menstruation trope. This is just the sort of different perspective us straight white cis dudes need to be seeking out re: things we like and are passionate about (like horror) ... it provides a completely different reading to films we’ve all seen and love and broadens the criteria for how we think about (and judge) horror films in the future. Excited to see what films y’all unpack next.
