Harper1985Hosts that give the most! The topics discussed are so useful and true to life. I really enjoy the dynamic of Sunny and Olga and how they share how to juggle the many aspects of their careers and other day-to-day responsibilities. What you hear is gold, not to mention the FB community page and different events they host.

Aspiring Artist SchoolCritiquesI recently became aware of your podcast and I would like to thank you both for the kind and honest way you are using your experiences to guide others on their own personal writer illustrator journeys. I recently listened to your Critique podcast. As a former art student and now a professor I was nodding in agreement along with the recommendations that you offered. Until… I was part of a critique that did not go well. The reviewer was very unkind in word and deed. There was no “sandwich” , no suggestions, in fact the reviewer, literally threw my art work back at me. The whole table was agape. I cannot believe I did not cry, but I didn’t. On my way home I said to myself I am going to listen to that darn podcast again. I did and happy ending. Your podcast helped me to focus on the small nuggets from the critique that I heard the reviewer give to others that I thought I could do to my work. I made changes based on those the next day after a good night sleep. The advice from you heart felt message helped me get in the right frame of mind to move forward. I will forever be a devoted listener to your program and hope I get to meet y’all someday soon.

bhayman111Fresh voices about “how things work”!When this podcast debuted, the hosts published the first 4 episodes (!), and so I binged listened to all four over a couple of days. Things I dig about this podcast: 1. Olga illustrates for traditional publishers, and Sunny illustrates for self-published authors. Which I think will bring a new perspective to illustrating children's books when we introduce the self-published/kickstarter variable into the equation. I look forward to their take on that. 2. Both have entered the children's book illustration industry later in life, and I'm always interested in what creators have to say when it comes to deciding to pursue a creative career after the kids have grown. 3. Both artists are fairly new to children's book illustration and are very candid about the things they did not know going in. In the first few episodes they often use the phrase, "how things worked," in the context of, "I didn't know how things worked." And I love that, because I think every industry-creative or otherwise-has this unwritten set of rules or guidelines of how things work. There's a way to break into every career, but if you know a little inside baseball, if you have a little knowledge up front about how things work, it makes the journey a little less rocky. So, final thoughts on this is: Listen to this podcast if you want some fresh, new perspectives on illustration and the children's book industry. Also, if you're getting into the game later on in life (um...hello-it me!) it's always refreshing hearing voices that are closer to your same age as an alternative to the twenty-something fresh out of art-school that got a contract with Scholastic on their first job interview. Yeah, nobody likes that person...except maybe Scholastic, but that's it!
