Let's Make A Horror

27

From the team that brought you the Webby award-winning Let's Make A Sci-Fi, a New Yorker Best Podcast of 2022, and the hilariously heartfelt Let's Make A Rom-Com, comes season three: Let's Make A Horror. This time, comedians Mark Chavez, Maddy Kelly, and Ryan Beil will make you laugh while they try to make you scream. Over 10 episodes, Mark, Maddy, and Ryan will learn what it takes to make truly frightening horror, interviewing Hollywood writers, directors, and enthusiasts; probing their deepest fears; and eventually taking a stab at writing and directing their own shocking short film.

    So fun and entertaining!
I LOVE the 3rd season where they make a short horror film! I appreciate that they’re not huge horror fans because they truly come at it like a newbie and try to understand what makes a good horror movie. The finished product is pretty good as well! I wouldn’t second guess seeing it at film festivals. The hosts are also very entertaining and funny, poking fun while also respecting the genre and taking the task seriously.

    Great show!
A wonderfully entertaining tour through the creative process of writing and creating a thing! I discovered season three which was a happy surprise and went on to binge the first two seasons and I am super impressed with the results as well as entertained and a bit educated to the process too. I would love more seasons!!

Everything I need in a podcast
Fun interesting guests. Light hearted, conversational style (but edited and shaped to not waste time). Great personalities with a good vibe between them. An entertaining way to learn about genre and entertainment writing and develop a healthy respect for how difficult it is.

    A Gem
I started with season 2 and it was such a fun experience to be brought into this fictional world and see it being built and get bigger and richer. I looked forward to each episode so much that I delayed listening to the finale because I didn’t want it to end. I didn’t want to leave the world they created. Please make a season 3!

    Fun, Funny and inFormative
Super enjoyable and I have no interest in writing a screenplay. I’ve shared it with a bunch of friends too

    Such good fun!
This Lets Write a Rom-com podcast was mentioned in the NYTimes, and what a find! The 3 writers/comedians have great rapport and are fun to listen to. Plus they seek out advice from experts, so if u want writing tips, listen up! I was skeptical of the proposed storyline at first, but by the end, I was convinced this story would be great to watch as a film. I thoroughly enjoyed every episode❤️ and hope some film company makes a movie out of this.

    I’ve enjoyed both seasons
As a sometime writer, I’ve found their process & expert consultations helpful, and the banter makes it entertaining. I hope there’s a third!

    Let’s Listen to a Podcast
We all watch TV and go to the movies, but most of us probably don’t know much about where they come from. Let’s Make… is a fascinating look at what goes into developing the stories and characters that we love. The hosts are three very funny people who clearly enjoy working together. I love this show and I can’t wait to see what they do next!

I like never do this, I swear.
My inaugural podcast review, and all I do is listen to podcasts while at home with babies. I think this podcast is fun and can’t wait each week for the new episode. I’m learning about the writing ups and downs while getting to listen to their creative process. Thanks y’all.

    Good Fun
Very cool to hear the process for refining an idea into a script. I enjoyed each episodes focus on one aspect of the creative journey and having the experts on to give advice was prefect. Overall enjoyed my time listening to this, I can only hope for this to continue.

    Great!
Love the host’s chemistry and humour Fun to follow the process. And after seeing Moonfall on the plane… Halle Barry would be better to chose your production. 😁

    Fun show!
Great idea for a show! The podcast, not progeny. YThe only thing I would change is they should have wrote an audio drama from the get go. A lot of their overuse of exposition was increased by a narrator that is essentially reading stage notes. I would suggest that the writers check out some of the Alien or Star Wars audio dramas from recent years. Not only would they be writing within the medium that the show will actually be presented in, but an audio drama series is more likely to get picked up than a TV series. Another season would be great. I would prefer that they stick to scifi, but espionage would also be cool. That would be easier to set on earth and would be easier to do as an audio drama. They should avoid genres that require too much visualization.

    By dummies for dummies
Started to listen but found myself cringing early on after hearing a lady referred to as “they”. Science fiction indeed.

Listen to friends have fun collaborating
It was interesting to listen to the three of them struggle to be writers and not comedians. They are obviously not readers. All the examples of the kinds of story they want to tell come from TV or movies, not the rich written, drawn, and voiced SF tradition. And, despite their desire to make an “earnest” SciFi, they never reference the darker, serious giants of TV and movies: 2001, Forbidden Planet, Planet of the Apes , Farscape, Blake’s 7, Babylon 5, Space: 1999, and—the closest to what they tried to write!—2005’s Battlestar Galactica. I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised. After all, it’s not called “Let’s make SF”. Their science is not great. I wish they had researched the tech they used more. (No, Orion ships don’t just fire one bomb, they use thousands, and they can’t be that fragile.) Of course, the narrator still thinks the aquatic ape theory is taken seriously, so research isn’t their strong suit. What they made is one notch above a SciFi original. A good pilot, but not a very strong one, with stereotyped characters and lots of unanswered questions that seem more like gaps in their understanding than opportunities for future storytelling. If you have a day or two of errands around town, put it on in the car or your earbuds. It makes no great demands on your attention and you will hear a good bunch of friends having fun collaborating on something they’re committed to. The protagonists are likable and amusing.
  • ShawnLacy
    Oh wow!
The pilot is actually good! Lee really landed the whole creepy mother thing! I think that was an awesome idea because it gives you that “look at the train wreck” feeling. Now I want to know what happens. Now finish the season and if tv won’t take it just read it like this on here :) I loved the whole behind the scenes of the process, I’d love a whole podcast series of stuff like this. This was a really unique, interesting, 5 star idea & podcast. Loved it all. Thank you guys!
  • Mizmaia
    Good stuff!
I didn’t know what to expect. But I really enjoyed the indidvual episodes and I REALLY liked the pilot! Worth a listen.
  • jambolio02
    Very fun!
I really enjoyed this podcast. However I feel cheated (not really)!! You get so involved in listening each week that now I really want this show to be made. I need to know what happens to Kirby next. Is there going to be a second season? Either way, very fun and funny!
  • Old Mintie
    I actually like this!
I normally don’t like media about how to write—how to books, interviews with writers, etc. I find them very dull. But this was really fun and insightful. You’re going on a journey with the writers, rather than being lectured at by experts. They’re not complete novices, true, but they’re trying something new for them. Very relatable and actually more helpful for me than all the other stuff.
  • MajorCat1224
    PROGENY!!!
This was Epic. From the character development to the first draft this whole thing came together amazingly. Thank you for creating something that I hope comes to fruition on a tv screen. Kirby will be an awesome heroine!

    Episode 1
Wow! Really impressed. Enjoyed the pilot way more than I thought I would be.

    A fun adventure in itself!
I am so glad that I found this podcast! All three hosts are witty and have an amazing chemistry as a group. I found myself laughing at their quick quips, and greatly appreciated their honestly with the process. To see behind the curtain of the writing process and hear from experts in the industry was something I had never experienced before. During the early episodes, I found myself brainstorming my own ideas and creating my own worlds right along with them. I will absolutely revisit these episodes on low creativity days or if I need inspiration! Please please please do a second season! I challenge you all do do a mystery or a romance script!

    Creative Vulnerability at its Best
Getting the inside view on a writers’ room (even if it is one with a gimmick), is great as a person who writes sometimes. Hilarious at moments, thought provoking at other times, it’s consistently compelling. The balance of the core writers and the guest experts is perfect. The production is fully fabulous. Highly recommend.
